It is known as Follicular Unit Extraction and is a widely used technique in hair transplantation around the globe. The technique was intended to replace the traditional FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) method. The FUT procedure was performed by removing an entire portion of skin or scalp and implanting it into the target area. FUE makes it much simpler, as only the hair follicles are extracted, as opposed to the entire scalp or epidermis.
During the initial appraisal of a patient’s suitability, the degree of hair loss, the availability of healthy scalps to extract hair follicles for the transplant, and the patient’s lifestyle habits will all be considered.
Patients with certain medical disorders, including cicatricial alopecia, diffuse unpatterned alopecia, body dysmorphic disorder, and trichtillomania, may not be candidates for hair transplant procedures in Singapore. Due to the numerous factors that have been considered, a thorough medical and family history analysis and physical examination must be performed during the consultation.
1. Anaesthesia and tooth extraction
Your donor area will be cleansed with an antiseptic solution and then anesthetized with anesthesia prior to hair follicle extraction. Donor sites can be the body or the back of the side of the cranium. Each hair follicle is extracted from the donor site and preserved in a special solution for implantation.
2. Hair Transplant Examination
Each individual hair graft undertakes a selection process in which they are carefully inspected under a microscope, and only the best and most usable hair grafts are chosen. This procedure ensures the quality of the hair transplantation and increases their survivability.
3. Planning & Implantation
After selecting the best hair grafts, we will plan the placement of the grafts to make the transplant appear as natural as feasible. The angle, orientation, and distribution of the grafts are the factors we consider. Once the plan has been finalized, the extracted hair follicles are implanted in the balding areas of your scalp.
You may experience edema at the donor site and across your forehead for several days following surgery. Your doctor will advise you on how to care for your transplant following surgery in order to increase its chances of survival. Recommendations may include sleeping with your head inclined, restrictions on shampooing your hair, or even a week or so off from work.
To determine how many grafts are required, several factors must be considered. First, what region is affected and to what extent has there been thinning? Typically, 400-600 hair grafts are required for a full head of hair, while 1000-3000 grafts are required to cover 90cm2 of the scalp. Therefore, you may only require 500-1,500 grafts if the only affected area is the frontal hairline, which is typically 10-30cm2. Depending on the required density and the availability of donors, the amount of hair grafts required for each individual varies significantly.
Having to conceal behind a wig is a temporary measure. Even with medication, the effects of hair growth will gradually fade away over time. However, a hair transplant will allow you to grow hair naturally for the remainder of your life. Permanent results are obtained because your new hair follicles are resistant to the hormones that initially caused balding.
In addition, virtually no dangers are associated with hair transplant procedures, so you have nothing to worry about! It only requires a small needle to transplant the hair follicles on your scalp in order to prevent the formation of unsightly scars. Optionally, a mild sedative will be provided to assist you relax during the procedure. A few days after a hair transplant, you can resume your normal activities due to the absence of discomfort.
